Photo courtesy of AssoulineTo fête the 60th anniversary of the House of Pierre Cardin this year, artsy publisher Assouline is putting out a thick new coffee table book,"Pierre Cardin: 60 Years of Innovation," celebrating the French designer. Written by Jean-Pascal Hesse, the 300-page book chronicles Cardin's life -- he was born in 1922 near Venice and raised in Paris -- and career, which included stints with surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli and 'New Look' creator Christian Dior before launching his namesake couture label in 1950. Cardin went on to become a fashion icon and helped define the mod style of the '60s and '70s with his signature sculptural, space-age-inspired dresses (which were worn by Jackie Kennedy) and futuristic menswear donned by The Beatles. The business-savvy designer was also one of the first in the industry to see the potential behind licensing the Pierre Cardin brand, eventually slapping his name on everything from accessories and perfume to housewares and restaurants, making millions in the process.
